A Sense of History

San Miguel de Allende is a charming colonial city of more than 100,000 people located more than 6200 ft. / 1890 meters above sea level in the Central Mexico state of Guanajuato.

San Miguel el Grande was founded in 1542 and renamed “San Miguel de Allende” in 1826 in honor of native son Ignacio Maria de Allende, one of leaders in the 1810 War of Independence against Spanish rule.

From the moment you arrive in San Miguel de Allende you will sense the qualities of this colonial Mexican town.  Nestled in 6,000 feet above sea level at the foot of the Picacho Mountains, San Miguel de Allende has long been a haven for the intrepid traveller.  The fabled light, the colorful festivals, the bustling cosmopolitan scene, the gourmet food, the architectural beauty, the natural landscapes and especially the warmth of its people will leave you feeling rested, inspired, and energized. Touring the galleries, strolling through the artisan’s market, or just sitting on the Jardin will guarantee you a vacation you won’t soon forget.  It’s no wonder that in 2008, SMA became a UNESCO World Heritage Site , and for many represents the essence, and the heart of Mexico.The Mexican government declared San Miguel a national historic monument in 1926 which restricted development in the historic center and has preserved the town’s colonial character.  In 2008 San Miguel was delared a Unesco World Heritage site, a prize The “jardin”, or the main plaza, is the center of the historic district and the location of the Parroquia, the distinctive and much photographed church that is a San Miguel landmark.

A Popular Tourist Destination

In the 1940’s San Miguel de Allende became a popular expatriate destination renown for its mild sunny climate, colonial architecture and prominent art schools including the Instituto Allende and the Bellas Artes.

Known for its numerous festivals and holidays, San Miguel is a favorite tourist destination. Popular fiestas include Semana Santa (Easter week), Mexican Independence Day (September 16th) and the colorful religious Posadas during the Christmas season.
